چکیده

An air–sea interaction model that includes turbulent transport due to capillary waves (surface ripples) is developed. The model differs from others in that the physical premises are applicable to low wind speeds (10-m wind speed, U10 , 5 m s21) as well as higher wind speeds. Another new feature of the model is an anisotropic roughness length, which allows a crosswind component of the stress to be modeled. The influence of the angle between the mean wind direction and the mean direction of wave propagation is included in the anisotropic

A Sea State Parameterization with Nonarbitrary Wave Age Applicable to Low and Moderate Wind Speeds

A simple coupled flux and sea state model is developed. It is applicable to low, moderate, and high wind speeds, with a nonarbitrary wave age. It is fully consistent with an atmospheric flux parameterization. The flux model includes the influence of capillary waves on surface stress, which dominate surface stress on a waveperturbed surface for U10 , 7 m s21. The coupled model is verified for co...

Turbulent Airflow at Young Sea States with Frequent Wave Breaking Events: Large-Eddy Simulation

A neutrally stratified turbulent airflow over a very young sea surface at a high-wind condition was investigated using large-eddy simulations. In such a state, the dominant drag at the sea surface occurs over breaking waves, and the relationship between the dominant drag and local instantaneous surface wind is highly stochastic and anisotropic. To model such a relationship, a bottom boundary st...

The Effect of Different Sea State Dependent Roughness Parameterizations on the Sensitivity of the Atmospheric Circulation in a Regional Model

An alternative approach for the parameterization of the air-sea momentum flux in the marine surface boundary layer was implemented into a regional coupled atmosphere-wave model. The sensitivity of the atmospheric circulation to this new parameterization was assessed and compared to two different approaches using Monte Carlo simulations. Two approaches explicitly use the sea state in the computa...

Effect of Ocean Waves on Air-sea Momentum Fluxes and Hurricane Intensity

Recent observational studies demonstrate that airsea momentum flux at high wind conditions in hurricanes strongly depends on the wave field and that the drag coefficient (Cd = u*/U10) levels off or even decreases at very high winds (Powell et al. 2003). Yet most hurricane research and forecast model utilize the bulk parameterization, i.e., the boundary layer parameterization based on the Monin-...

Structure of AGCM-Simulated Convectively Coupled Kelvin Waves and Sensitivity to Convective Parameterization

A study of the convectively coupled Kelvin wave (CCKW) properties from a series of atmospheric general circulation model experiments over observed sea surface temperatures is presented. The simulations are performed with two different convection schemes (a mass flux scheme and a moisture convergence scheme) using a range of convective triggers, which inhibit convection in different ways. Increa...
